Spruce oils are often filed with pine. They belong to a separate genus, Picea, and the profile differs. Black spruce is led by bornyl acetate, an ester, which gives it a softer, balsamic character than the sharper pinene-led pines.
01 · Origin
Picea mariana is a slender conifer of the North American boreal forest, common in bogs and on cold, wet, acidic ground. Its resin was once used as an adhesive and for waterproofing. This oil is distilled in Canada from the needles and twigs of wild-crafted organic trees.
02 · Chemistry
Bornyl acetate is the leading constituent. Camphene and alpha-pinene follow, with delta-3-carene and myrcene. The ester gives the sweet resinous body; the monoterpenes give the cold, clean opening.
03 · In Practice
Fresh, balsamic and sweet, with the clear scent of conifer forest. Top-to-middle. Diffusion, massage blends, bath preparations, meditation practice and forest accords in natural perfumery. Comparative work with Spruce, White (No. 1468) and Spruce (Excelsa Spruce) (No. 1470). Blends with fir, cedarwood, frankincense, lavender, pine, rosemary and orange.
