Digestion, by Constitution

Digestion is the root. Ayurveda calls its fire agni β€” and it burns differently in each of us.

In the classical texts, agni β€” the digestive fire β€” is the hinge of health; what it fails to transform becomes ama, the residue behind much imbalance. Vata's fire is irregular. Pitta's runs hot. Kapha's is slow. The support meets the fire where it is.

01 Β· The Pattern

Three states of the digestive fire

The dosha that leads in a person shapes how digestion falters. Reading which it is points to the oil and the formula that fit.

Vata Β· air

Irregular & bloated

Gas, bloating and a variable appetite. The signature is irregularity.

Pitta Β· fire

Sharp & acidic

Acidity, heat and a sharp hunger. The signature is excess heat.

Kapha Β· earth

Heavy & slow

Sluggish digestion and heaviness after eating. The signature is stagnation.

02 Β· The Oil

Ginger, to kindle

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is the warming carminative of the kitchen and the clinic alike β€” classically used to kindle a low or irregular fire. In a diluted warm-belly massage oil, or diffused, it brings its warmth to a sluggish or unsettled digestion. Where the fire runs hot and acidic, cooling Peppermint is the better fit.

03 Β· The Formula

GutVeda 55 β€” balance, from within

Where the oil warms and settles, the formula works the terrain. GutVeda 55 draws on fifty-five herbs in samyoga for digestive balance and the gut-brain axis. DigestVeda 28 is its companion where acid balance and comfort are the specific need.

The Pair

The oil kindles and soothes; the formula rebuilds the ground beneath it. Together they meet digestion where it actually sits.
