Ylang ylang Complete is often taken for a mixture of the graded fractions. It is properly the product of a single uninterrupted distillation, with the whole of the oil collected together. Extra, I, II and III are cuts taken at successive points in a run; Complete keeps the full spectrum.
01 · Origin
Cananga odorata is a tropical tree of the custard-apple family, Annonaceae, native to Southeast Asia and long established on the Indian Ocean islands. This oil is distilled in Madagascar from certified organic blossom. The flowers open green and turn yellow as they mature; the mature yellow flowers are the ones taken for distillation.
02 · Chemistry
Sesquiterpenes lead: germacrene D, trans,trans-alpha-farnesene and beta-caryophyllene. Linalool and geranyl acetate carry the floral top, while benzyl benzoate anchors the heavier end. Early fractions are richer in esters; later ones in sesquiterpenes. Complete holds both.
03 · In Practice
Sweet, floral and creamy, with a balsamic depth that lasts. Heart-to-base in natural perfumery. Less sharp at the opening than Ylang Ylang, Extra (No. 3041), and broader through the dry-down. Massage blends, bath, diffusion and natural perfumery. A small proportion is ample. Blends with sandalwood, jasmine, bergamot, vetiver, rose and patchouli.
