Thyme oil is assumed to mean Thymus vulgaris. The genus is large, and several species are distilled. Thymus hyemalis is a separate species of south-east Spain, named for its winter flowering.
01 · Origin
A low, woody shrub of the mint family, Lamiaceae, growing on dry, stony ground in south-eastern Spain. This oil is distilled in Spain from the flowering plant, wild-crafted and certified organic.
02 · Chemistry
A phenolic profile. Para-cymene leads, with thymol and gamma-terpinene. Para-cymene and gamma-terpinene are the biosynthetic precursors of thymol in the plant.
03 · In Practice
Warm, herbaceous and phenolic, with a dry, spicy edge. A middle note. Strong on skin: used at low concentration only, in massage blends and diffusion. Comparative work beside Thyme, Thymol (No. 2830) shows how two species reach a similar chemistry by different proportions. Blends with rosemary, lavender, lemon, pine, oregano and bergamot.
General information: For external use only. Dilute before applying to skin. Keep away from heat and sunlight. Keep out of reach of children. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.
