Maritime pine is best known for its resin, long tapped in south-west France for gum turpentine. This is a different material. It is distilled from needles and twigs, and it behaves as a fresh top note, not as a base.
01 · Origin
Pinus pinaster is native to the western Mediterranean and the Atlantic coast of France and Iberia, where it was planted extensively in the Landes to stabilise sandy ground. This oil is distilled in France from certified organic needles and twigs.
02 · Chemistry
Alpha-pinene and beta-pinene dominate, with delta-3-carene, myrcene and limonene behind them. Beta-caryophyllene, a sesquiterpene, adds a faint woody-peppery depth to the drydown. The profile is crisp and resinous, without the sweetness of balsam firs.
03 · In Practice
Fresh, coniferous and camphoraceous, with a clean, woody finish. A top note in natural perfumery. Diffusion, room scenting, massage blends and bath preparations. Comparative work with Pine (Scots Pine) organic (No. 1475) shows two pines side by side. For topical work, dilute in a carrier oil. Blends with lavender, rosemary, eucalyptus, juniper, cedarwood, lemon and cypress.
General information: For external use only. Dilute before applying to skin. Keep away from heat and sunlight. Keep out of reach of children. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.
