Mastic is best known as the resin of Chios, chewed and used in varnish and incense. This oil is not that resin. It is distilled from the leafy twigs of the same species, and the aroma is fresher, greener and lighter.
01 · Origin
Pistacia lentiscus is an evergreen shrub of the Anacardiaceae, the cashew family, and a relative of the pistachio. It is a characteristic plant of Mediterranean scrub. This oil is distilled in Morocco from wild-crafted organic twigs and leaves.
02 · Chemistry
Alpha-pinene leads. Myrcene and limonene follow, with terpinen-4-ol and gamma-terpinene. The monoterpene-dominated profile places the oil close to the conifers in character.
03 · In Practice
Fresh, resinous and balsamic, with a green, slightly peppery and fruity top. A top to middle note. Diffusion, massage blends and natural perfumery. Mastic oil works well in Mediterranean herb accords. Blends with cypress, juniper berry, rosemary, lavender, lemon, frankincense and myrtle.
General information: For external use only. Dilute before applying to skin. Keep away from heat and sunlight. Keep out of reach of children. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.
