Patchouli, Indonesia

Patchouli is often thought of as a heavy, dark resin. It is distilled from the dried leaves of a herb of the mint family. Fresh oil is green and somewhat harsh. It matures with age, darkening and deepening in tone over time.

01 · Origin

Pogostemon cablin is a bushy perennial of the Lamiaceae native to the tropics of Southeast Asia. Indonesia is the principal producer. The leaves are dried before distillation. This oil comes from conventionally grown plants in Indonesia.

02 · Chemistry

Patchouli alcohol, also called patchoulol, is the leading constituent. Delta-guaiene, alpha-guaiene and alpha-patchoulene follow. The sesquiterpene profile gives the oil its low volatility and tenacity. Comparison with Patchouli, Indonesia (Organic) (No. 2401) shows the effect of cultivation on a single origin.

03 · In Practice

Earthy, woody and musky, with a camphoraceous top and a sweet, wine-like depth as it ages. A base note and fixative. Natural perfumery, massage blends, diffusion and skincare formulation. Blends with vetiver, sandalwood, rose, bergamot, clary sage, labdanum and orange.
