Oregano is a culinary category, not a single species. Origanum vulgare, Origanum compactum, Thymbra capitata and the Mexican Lippia graveolens are all sold under the name. Their oils differ, and Moroccan Origanum compactum is among the most phenol-rich of them.
01 · Origin
A compact, upright Lamiaceae shrub of the dry hills of Morocco and southern Spain. This oil is distilled from the whole plant, wild-crafted under organic certification (DE-ÖKO-007).
02 · Chemistry
Carvacrol leads by a wide margin. Thymol follows. Gamma-terpinene and para-cymene are their biosynthetic precursors, and the ratio between precursors and phenols shifts with harvest timing. Phenol-dominant oils of this kind are among the strongest in the aromatic spectrum and are always used at very low dilution.
03 · In Practice
Intensely herbaceous, warm and spicy, with a sharp phenolic edge. A middle note. Diffusion in small amounts and highly diluted massage blends. Comparison with Oregano Vulgare (No. 2350) and Oregano, Mexico (No. 2345) illustrates the range under a single common name. Blends with lemon, rosemary, thyme, lavender, pine, eucalyptus and bergamot.
General information: For external use only. Dilute before applying to skin. Keep away from heat and sunlight. Keep out of reach of children. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.
