Much oil sold as lavender is lavandin, a sterile hybrid of true lavender and spike lavender. It is higher in camphor and propagated only by cuttings. This oil is Lavandula angustifolia, true lavender, grown in Kashmir.
01 · Origin
A small evergreen shrub of the Lamiaceae, native to the mountains of the western Mediterranean. In Kashmir it is cultivated in the valleys of the Himalayan foothills. This oil is distilled in India from the flowering plant, grown conventionally.
02 · Chemistry
Linalyl acetate and linalool lead, the ester and alcohol pair that defines true lavender. Beta-caryophyllene and lavandulyl acetate follow. The balance of ester to alcohol shapes the softness of the oil. Comparative work with Lavender Highland, Bulgaria (No. 1907) shows how altitude and region shift the same species.
03 · In Practice
Floral, herbaceous and sweet, with a soft woody undertone. A middle note. Diffusion, massage blends, bath preparations, skincare formulation and natural perfumery. Blends with bergamot, clary sage, geranium, cedarwood, rose, patchouli and chamomile.
