The name black sage suggests a Salvia. Cordia verbenacea is unrelated to the sages. It belongs to the borage family and its oil is built on sesquiterpenes rather than the ketones and oxides typical of sage.

01 · Origin

A shrub of the Brazilian Atlantic coast, known locally as erva-baleeira. It grows in sandy coastal vegetation and disturbed ground. This oil is distilled in Brazil from the leaves of wild plants.

02 · Chemistry

Alpha-pinene leads the monoterpene fraction. Trans-caryophyllene, alloaromadendrene and alpha-humulene make up the sesquiterpene body of the oil. The caryophyllene and humulene pairing is the same one found in hops and black pepper.

03 · In Practice

Herbaceous, woody and lightly peppery, with a dry green top and a resinous drydown. A middle note. Massage blends, diffusion and natural perfumery. Low dilutions suit body care formulation. Blends with copaiba, black pepper, rosemary, lavender, cedarwood and frankincense.
