Two plants share the name chamomile and almost nothing else. German chamomile, Matricaria chamomilla, distils blue with chamazulene. Roman chamomile distils pale and is built almost entirely on esters. The two are not substitutes for one another in a formula.
01 · Origin
A low, creeping perennial of Western Europe, long grown in physic gardens. This oil is distilled from the blossoms of certified organic cultivation in Hungary.
02 · Chemistry
Angelate esters dominate: isobutyl, isoamyl and methylallyl angelate. Ester-led oils of this kind sit at the soft end of the aromatic spectrum. Trans-pinocarveol adds a faint green edge.
03 · In Practice
Sweet, fruity and herbaceous, with the apple note the plant is named for in Greek. Diffusion, evening blends, bath preparations and massage. A small proportion carries a long way. Blends with lavender, bergamot, neroli, geranium, rose, clary sage and helichrysum.
