Chamomile, Blue CO2 (Organic)

The blue colour of German chamomile oil is often taken as a property of the flower. Chamazulene is not present in the living plant. It forms from matricin during the heat of steam distillation. Extraction without that heat produces a different oil from the same blossoms.

01 · Origin

Matricaria chamomilla is an annual of the Asteraceae, native to Europe and western Asia. This extract is produced in Serbia from certified organic blossoms.

02 · Process

Supercritical carbon dioxide extracts the blossoms at low temperature. Less matricin is converted to chamazulene, and the extract is led by alpha-bisabolol and farnesene. The result sits closer to the composition of the fresh flower than a distilled oil does. Comparison with Chamomile, Blue (organic) (No. 1680) shows the effect of the method on a single species.

03 · In Practice

Sweet, herbaceous and hay-like, with a soft fruity note. A middle note. Skincare formulation, massage blends and natural perfumery at low concentration. The extract can stain, so a fan diffuser is used rather than a water-based ultrasonic unit. Blends with lavender, rose, neroli, helichrysum, bergamot and sandalwood.
