About the Marmas

The seven main marmas correspond to the seven chakras (energy centers of the body) through which all vital
functions such as excretion, reproduction, digestion and distribution of vital substances are controlled.
The root marma (guda) is located at the base of the spine and the entire pelvic floor area is assigned to it. Its
consciousness is earth-centered,
existential and reproductive. The root marma controls the excretory processes and the muladhara chakra.
The bladder marma (basti) is respon- sible for the pelvic organs, sexual ener- gy, excretion (fluid) and
svadhisthana chakra.
The navel marma (nabhi) is considered the center of the body. This marma transforms everything we digest
physically and mentally and supervises the manipura chakra.
The heart marma (hridaya) is responsible for the emotions and the whole personality. It is the most important
marma, since all connections to the other mar-

mas are controlled from it, as well as the vital substances are distributed throughout the body. It controls
the anahata chakra.
The throat marma (nila/manya) consists of two elements. Nila is the marma of speech, free expression and
controls the thyroid gland and blood circulation to the brain. Whereas manya oversees the tongue as the organ
of taste and the glands that moisten it. Together they oversee the vishuddha chakra.
The forehead mar- ma (sthapani) is also known as the “third eye.” It is considered the center of the head and is
our reference point for the senses, mind and analytical intelligence. It is the
guardian of the ajna chakra.
The hairline marma (adhipati) is the "supreme ruler", as it sits at the highest point of the head. It is
responsible for higher consciousness and controls the pineal gland, the entire nervous system and the sahasrara
chakra.
By anointing the appropriate marma oil, these energy centers can be activated.
