Hyssop Decumbens, Cineol (Organic)

Hyssop oil carries a reputation for caution, and with the common type that reputation is justified. Hyssopus officinalis var. decumbens is a different chemotype. Its profile is led by 1,8-cineole and is low in the pinocamphone ketones found in ordinary hyssop.

01 · Origin

Hyssop is a small aromatic shrub of the Lamiaceae, native to southern Europe. The decumbens form is low and spreading, growing on dry hillsides of the western Mediterranean. This oil is distilled in Spain from the flowering plant, wild-crafted under organic certification.

02 · Chemistry

1,8-cineole dominates. Beta-pinene and cis-beta-ocimene follow and give a fresh, green lift. The low ketone content places this oil with the cineole oils in handling, nearer to eucalyptus and rosemary than to the other chemotypes of its own species.

03 · In Practice

Fresh, camphoraceous and sweetly herbal, softer than eucalyptus, with a faint floral note from the blossom. A top to middle note. Diffusion, massage blends, bath preparations and natural perfumery. The chemotype on the label should be confirmed before one hyssop is substituted for another. Blends with lavender, rosemary, sage, bay, myrtle, lemon and cypress.
