Cistus (organic)

Cistus oil and labdanum are often confused. Labdanum is the sticky gum the plant exudes, worked into resinoids and absolutes for amber accords. This oil is steam distilled from the leaves, and its profile is greener and more herbaceous.

01 · Origin

Cistus ladaniferus, the gum rock rose, is an evergreen shrub of the Cistaceae family, native to the western Mediterranean. Despite the common name it is not a rose. This oil is distilled in Spain from certified organic plants. In summer heat the leaves glisten with resin.

02 · Chemistry

Alpha-pinene leads, with camphene and bornyl acetate. Trimethylcyclohexanone, ledene and trans-pinocarveol give the warm, slightly animalic undertone. Para-cymene and viridiflorol complete a profile far more complex than its monoterpene head suggests.

03 · In Practice

Warm, herbaceous and ambery, with a resinous, faintly leathery depth. Middle to base. Natural perfumery, especially amber and chypre structures; skincare formulation; meditation practice. A small amount alters a blend markedly. Blends with lavender, frankincense, sandalwood, patchouli, clary sage, helichrysum and bergamot.
