Chamomile Blue, Egypt (Organic)

Blue Tansy is regularly sold as blue chamomile. It is a different plant, Tanacetum annuum, with a different chemistry. Blue chamomile in the strict sense is German chamomile, Matricaria chamomilla, and its colour is not present in the living flower.

01 · Origin

An annual of the daisy family, native to Europe and western Asia and now grown widely. This oil is distilled from the blossoms of certified organic cultivation in Egypt. It reads sweeter than German chamomile from Nepal.

02 · Chemistry

The bisabolol oxides A and B lead the profile, with trans-beta-farnesene and alpha-bisabolol behind them. Chamazulene forms in the still from the precursor matricin, which is why the oil emerges deep blue while the flower heads are white and yellow. Comparison with Blue Tansy (No. 1690) and Chamomile, Blue (No. 1680) separates the three clearly.

03 · In Practice

Warm and fruity on opening, like a date loaf from the oven, turning herbaceous as it dries down. Used at low concentration in massage blends, skincare formulation and bath preparations. The pigment stains fabric and plastic; a fan diffuser suits it, a water-based ultrasonic unit does not. Blends with lavender, rose, neroli, bergamot, clary sage and sandalwood.
