Cajeput / Melaleuca leucadendron (organic)

Cajeput is a trade name applied to more than one paperbark. The taxonomy of Melaleuca has been revised repeatedly, and Melaleuca leucadendron and Melaleuca cajuputi are both found on labels for oils of this type. The botanical name stated here identifies the source tree.

01 · Origin

A tall paperbark of Southeast Asia and northern Australia, with pale, layered bark. The name comes from the Malay kayu putih, white wood. This oil is distilled in Vietnam from the leaves of wild-crafted, certified organic trees.

02 · Chemistry

1,8-cineole dominates, giving the fresh, camphoraceous opening. Alpha-terpineol softens it with a lilac-like sweetness, and limonene adds a light citrus note. The profile is close to eucalyptus but warmer and less sharp. Comparative work alongside Tea Tree, M.A. (No. 2780) shows how different two Melaleuca species can be.

03 · In Practice

Penetrating, fresh and camphoraceous, with a sweet, fruity undertone. A top note. Diffusion, massage blends and bath preparations. Blends with lavender, rosemary, eucalyptus, niaouli, peppermint, pine and clove.
