Marjoram, Sweet (organic)

Several plants are sold as marjoram. Wild marjoram in many markets is Origanum vulgare, oregano. Spanish marjoram is Thymus mastichina, a thyme. Sweet marjoram is Origanum majorana, and its oil carries none of the phenolic heat of oregano.

01 · Origin

Origanum majorana is a tender perennial of the Lamiaceae, native to the eastern Mediterranean and long grown as a culinary herb. This oil is distilled from the whole flowering plant of certified organic cultivation in Egypt (DE-ÖKO-007).

02 · Chemistry

Terpinen-4-ol leads, with trans-sabinene hydrate as the characteristic secondary alcohol of the species. Gamma-terpinene, alpha-terpinene and sabinene make up the monoterpene fraction. The alcohol content gives the oil its warmth and keeps it gentle in formulation relative to the phenol-rich oreganos.

03 · In Practice

Warm, herbaceous and spicy, with a sweet, slightly woody depth. A middle note. Massage blends, bath preparations, evening diffusion and skincare formulation. Blends with lavender, bergamot, cypress, rosemary, eucalyptus, chamomile and cedarwood.
