Jasmine, Sambac (Absolute)

Jasmine sambac and Jasmine grandiflorum are often confused in trade. They are distinct species with distinct chemistry. Sambac, the Arabian jasmine, is fresher, greener and fruitier, with a methyl anthranilate facet that recalls orange flower; grandiflorum is the warmer, classical perfumery jasmine.

01 · Origin

Jasminum sambac is an evergreen climbing shrub of the olive family, Oleaceae, native to South and Southeast Asia. In India the flowers are strung into garlands and used in temple offering. This absolute is produced in India from conventionally grown blossom.

02 · Process

Solvent extraction is the classical method for jasmine, since heat alters the delicate floral fraction. The flowers are extracted to a concrete, which is washed with alcohol to yield the absolute. Benzyl acetate and linalool lead, with benzyl benzoate, cis-3-hexenyl benzoate, benzyl alcohol and methyl anthranilate.

03 · In Practice

Deep, warm, heady and penetrating, with a green, fruity facet. A heart note with strong diffusion and tenacity. Natural perfumery, massage blends and anointing at low dilution. Blends with sandalwood, rose, neroli, bergamot, ylang ylang and vetiver.
