Eucalyptus is usually taken to mean a cineole oil. Eucalyptus dives is different. The commercial type, the broad-leaved peppermint, is led by piperitone, a ketone with a minty character, and 1,8-cineole is not among its leading constituents. Eucalyptus Globulus (No. 1370) is the cineole reference.

01 Β· Origin

A tree of the tablelands of south-eastern Australia, named for its peppermint-scented leaves. This oil is distilled from twigs and leaves, grown conventionally in South Africa.

02 Β· Chemistry

Piperitone leads. Alpha-phellandrene, para-cymene and terpinen-4-ol follow. The combination of a ketone with these monoterpenes gives an aroma that sits between peppermint and camphor. Ketone-led oils are used at low concentration.

03 Β· In Practice

Fresh, minty and camphoraceous, strong and penetrating. A top note. Diffusion, sports massage blends at low dilution, and household cleaning formulations. Blends with rosemary, lavender, pine, lemon, tea tree, cedarwood and thyme.
