Holy Basil is a sacred plant of India, where it is planted around temples and shrines to protect them against negative influences. It is a component of many ayurvedic treatments. Its main action is to support the respiratory, immune, and digestive systems.
The oil has a fragrance that is refreshing, invigorating, meditative, and somewhat reminiscent of clove, and indeed it has a very high eugenol content (a phenol) so it should be used with caution and even then in very low concentrations for aromatherapy massage. The oil is however wonderful for inhaling and in a room diffuser. It blends well with citrus and floral oils. Diffuse before meditation to clear the mind. Refreshes and invigorates mind, body, and spirit.
